Chivas beats América 2-1 in Mexican superclásico MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Omar Arellano scored twice to lead
Chivas over America 2-1 Sunday in the 14th round of the Mexican Apertura. Arellano steered in a ball from Sergio Santana to put
the visitors ahead in the 12th minute of the derby match and then slotted in
a shot from the edge of the area for the winner in the 71st. Chivas now has 21 points to leap ahead of Cruz Azul and
Pumas in the competitive Group 2. Tecos and Morelia also have 21 points and are above
Chivas with a better goal difference. Cruz Azul has 20 points, Pumas 19 and
the Eagles stayed on 15, with three weeks left to play in the regular
season. Argentine defender Sebastian Dominguez headed in a cross
from countryman Federico Insua in the 32nd for America, which invested
heavily in new players and a coach and now is in danger of missing the
playoffs for the second season in a row.
"The
truth is that
it will be very hard to advance, but we need to forget about that and start
playing better," Eagles striker Alfredo Moreno said.
Earlier in Estadio Universitario, Fernando Morales scored a goal with 11
minutes left to play as the Pumas rallied to tie 1-1 against Ciudad Juarez.
The Pumas have gone six straight games without a victory.
Cruz Azul also came back to tie Puebla 2-2 with a goal from Julio Cesar
Dominguez.
Alejandro Vela opened the scoring with a header in the 42nd, but Puebla took
the lead with two goals in five minutes by Horacio Peralta in the 52nd and
57th before Dominguez scored the equalizer in the 72nd.
Also, it was: San Luis 2, Monterrey 0; Jaguares 0, Toluca 0; Pachuca 1,
Morelia 1; Tigres 1, Necaxa 1; and Atlas 2, Santos 1.
